The Terrace, Windemere

Why go? Finding a holiday house big enough for multiple familes can be challenging.That’s why The Terrace in Windermere is such a find. This pretty Grade II-listed street has just five elegant houses on it, each sleeping between 12 and 14, and can be rented individually or as the whole street.

Accommodation: Each house has its own individual highlights, from vast Chesterfield sofas to bars and cinemas, while all of them have off-street parking and gardens with bbqs. To top off the home-from-home vibe of the accommodation, dogs are allowed in all the properties.

Get active: The Terrace is well-placed for exploring The Lake District, from watersports on the lake to cycling around the countryside.Bicycle and kayak rental shops are nearby, as well as more adrenaline-fuelled activities such as Go Ape! and Kankku – a 4×4 off-road driving experience. 

Top tip: During the school holidays the houses must be booked for a minimum of one week, but they are available for weekends throughout the rest of the year.

Follow the Paddington Bear Trail

CAN YOU SPOT PADDINGTON?

Paddington Bear is making a major comeback this winter with the hotly-anticipated Paddington film released on 28 November, starring Hugh Bonneville and Nicole Kidman. Young fans can get in on the action by following The Paddington Trail – 50 Paddington Bear statues have been decorated by famous artists, designers and celebrities like Benedict Cumberbatch and Emma Watson, and placed at London’s key landmarks.

Don’t miss the out-of-this-world bear hiding at The Royal Observatory, or the fabulous Paddington at Selfridges. The 3ft 6in statues will be auctioned later in the year to raise money for charities including the NSPCC and its Childline service.

The Paddington Trail is open 4 November 2014 to 30 December 2014.

Halloween Tea for Kids

Children’s Cookery Classes at London Italian Restaurant Tozi

What’s new? London Italian restaurant Tozi has started cookery classes for children during the school holidays, giving kids the chance to learn how to cook classic Italian food and get them confident in the kitchen!

Located in London Victoria – where you can go and catch a show at one of the area’s many theatres while the kids are busy learning – the lessons are taught by the restaurant’s head chef, Maurilio Molteni, with assistance from the all-Italian kitchen team.

Kids will get to grips with two classic mains of pizza and filled pasta, as well as the classic Italian desserts of biscotti and gelato. Starting from scratch, they will make their own pizza and pasta dough and choose their ingredients before tucking into their finished products at the end!

 

THE LOWDOWN:

The classes are available for kids aged five and up, and accommodate six children at a time so that each child gets hands-on tuition and supervision as they learn each dish.

Price: £10 per child for an hour and a half lesson.

Bear Gryll’s Kids Course: Adventure Awaits

You’ve watched him bounding through the wilderness and snacking on insects on TV – now the famous adventurer is giving children a chance to try his spine-tingling survival challenges for themselves.

Bear and his team of tough-guy experts have designed a special course, in partnership with activities provider Fit For Sport, to teach kids real-life survival techniques.

Family Traveller went along to watch the little adventurers in action. With mud-smeared faces, they wriggled under camouflage netting, practised fending off grizzlies, and shrieked with delight as Bear demonstrated (with a twig) how to disarm and eat a scorpion.

GET INVOLVED:

Even if your children don’t have a lot of opportunities for eating scorpions or making campfires in their everyday lives, Bear’s Survival Academy has a lot to offer. It’s a great way for kids to get out there, make friends and fall in love with adventure.

Day-long courses will be running throughout the summer, in various locations across London and the Home Counties, and are perfect for children aged 8–12.
